The Unknown Race
About us
The Unknown team is a bunch of ultracyclists who met in Italy during the Two Volcano Sprint race in 2022. We really liked Juliana’s idea that the proceeds from the race go to charity.
We also discussed racing ethics a lot: why we participate in these events, what we expect when we take part in them, and how to solve the rest of the world’s problems. After the finishers’ party, we had an additional afterparty, and a couple of beers later, The Unknown Race was born. Most of today’s world problems remained unsolved.
The Race
The Unknown Race is a self-supported race of around 1.000 km, starting and finishing in the same location. The locations of the checkpoints are not known before the race. It is up to you to plan your preferred route between the checkpoints.
Rules and Ethics
Unsupported
You ride on your own power and carry your own gear. That means no outside help, no support car and no public transport. Ferries are allowed for crossing rivers and lakes. Buy food, water and bike parts at commercial places, or use what the organisation provides.
Drafting
Drafting is allowed only during the neutralised start, until an organiser gives the sign. Pairs may draft each other for the whole race.
No penalties
A rider who breaks the law, the rules or the spirit of unsupported racing, and doesn’t report it to us, is removed from tracking. If you see a breach, such as someone drafting you, take a photo and report it. If a rider is in distress, help them. It won’t affect your result.
Traffic and safety
Roads stay open to traffic. Follow traffic rules and local laws at all times, and don’t take unnecessary risks.
